Diana Thorneycroft is an established Winnipeg artist known for producing and photographing sculptural dioramas and tableaux employing dark humour and childhood toys to explore a variety of subjects. Perhaps most famously, she used reproductions of paintings by members of the Group of Seven as backdrops to unfold narratives that question the relationship between the Canadian landscape and Canadian identity in her series “Group of Seven Awkward Moments”.
Thorneycroft’s celebrated career has spanned close to three decades and includes nearly 100 exhibitions, which have been shown or toured across Canada, the United States and Europe, as well as in Moscow, Tokyo and Sydney. Her work has been the subject of countless articles and reviews, as well as national radio and television documentaries, and was included in the Phaidon Press publication Blink (2002), which presents the work of 100 rising stars in photography who have emerged and broken new ground in the last five years.
