Do You Have to Understand Art to Love It?
Saturday, June 20, 2026
Doors Open: 1:00 PM | Panel Begins: 2:00 PM
It's one of the most common questions asked in galleries:
"What does it mean?"
But is understanding really necessary to appreciate a work of art?
Join us for an engaging panel discussion that explores how we connect with art through emotion, intuition, curiosity, and personal experience. Together, we'll examine whether meaning must be understood before it can be felt, and why some of the most memorable artworks are often the ones that resist easy explanation.
Moderated by Christine Klassen, the conversation will feature Megan Paterson of Aurelia Fine Art, artists JoAnn Godenir and Joanne MacDonald, along with invited collectors who will share their perspectives on living with, collecting, and responding to art.
Topics will include:
-
Can you love an artwork without fully understanding it?
-
Does knowing an artist's intention change the experience?
-
How do collectors choose the works they live with?
-
Is there a "right" way to engage with contemporary art?
-
What role do emotion, memory, and personal interpretation play in our experience of art?
Whether you're a seasoned collector, a regular gallery visitor, or someone who has ever felt uncertain about contemporary art, this conversation offers an open and welcoming opportunity to explore the many ways art can enrich our lives.
No art history degree required.
Admission is free.
Space is limited and advance registration is recommended.
