Referencing how the vastness of the cosmos converges with the intimacy of our individual experiences, Carl White’s newest body of work, CONSTELLATIONS, strives to illustrate these connections via a visual vocabulary of our world and mythologies. Never one to shy away from larger philosophical themes in his creative practice, this body of work unabashedly lures the viewer into a meditative tapestry, suggesting, as White says “the grandeur of the universe is not detached from our everyday lives but [is] deeply intertwined in it.”
Quite literally drawing from the cosmos, the spirituality of the colour blue and the transcendental power of art, Carl endeavours to create artwork that owes much to history but with his own characteristic style and contemporary handling of materials.
Carl White was born in Liverpool (UK) and studied painting, drawing and graphic design at the Alberta College of Art and Design (now AUArts) in Calgary. Known for his contemporary take on classical or Romantic subjects and techniques, White’s work has been widely exhibited and collected both nationally and internationally for over twenty years, including The Whyte Museum of the Rockies in Banff in 2019 and an upcoming show at the Art Gallery of Grand Prairie in spring 2021. He currently lives and works in Calgary where he is exceedingly active in the art community.
