Summer is a time for play and we loved setting up fun colour stories, emphasizing line and scale with our summer group show.
In addition to our annual summer group show of CKG artists - CHROMA - we are introducing the artwork of two artists - Jay Hanscom and Steve Speer.
Victoria-based painter JAY HANSCOM’s artwork definitely adds some comic inspired kapow to this summer’s show with his bold text-based mixed media paintings. “Both pop culture and art historical contexts infiltrate my work. Creative explorations are strongly influenced by my passions for, and broad interests in, music and film; weakness for childhood space adventure movies, classic westerns and hot-rod/ motorcycle culture.
STEVE SPEER has been a long time fixture in Calgary’s photography community. As a black and white landscape photographer, Steve’s photography focuses on the study of light and composition to emphasize his carefully structured shots. CKG is thrilled to be introducing his newest series of mesmerizing carbon prints on handmade Japanese washi paper. These process oriented details are what take his mages to the next level, truly showcasing the lush velvety blacks in carbon ink printing as well as the unique texture and fibre inherent in the handmade paper
ALSO - This year’s edition of CHROMA has an extra emphasis on experimentation and play, featuring bold experimental figurative work by Carl White, innovative large-scale photos by Julya Hajnoczky and Bryce Krynski, pattern exploration from Lisa Matthias, and new work by JoAnn Godenir, Karin McGinn, and Madeleine Lamont. With paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints, there is something for everyone in this playful summer exhibition.
