Josefina Rodriguez

Josefina Rodriguez is a Canadian-Argentinian artist based in Calgary, Alberta (Treaty 7 Territory). She holds a BFA in Ceramics from the Alberta University of the Arts.

Rooted in her experiences growing up in Latin America, her practice explores how patriarchal traditions and social expectations shape gender roles. She is curious about the stories women inherit, the roles they are asked to play, and what becomes possible when those expectations are questioned. Her work challenges narrow narratives of the female experience, reclaiming space for complexity, sensuality, and autonomy.

Through hand-built figurative ceramics and expressive drawings, Josefina explores sensation, pleasure, and resistance as vital parts of being human. Her work celebrates the strength and beauty of womanhood in its unconventional, unapologetic, and rebellious forms.

In her recent pit-fired works, this curiosity extends to the process itself. Fire, smoke, minerals, and weather leave unpredictable marks on carefully formed clay, creating an ongoing exchange between intention and chance. Communal pit firings in Southern Alberta bring shared knowledge, experimentation, and the pleasure of discovery into her practice.
