Lisa Matthias is an Edmonton-based artist with a diverse background. Her first formal training was in biology, where she obtained a Master of Science in plant ecology from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Science in ecology from the University of Guelph. After working as a professional ecologist for over a decade, she went on to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from the University of Alberta and now works as an artist and educator full-time.
Her work frequently draws from her experiences as a biologist, and she often captures microscopic images and videos in her creative practice. The idea that everything is part of a larger assemblage, emphasized by the recognition of patterns and relatedness across species and scales of life, is a central theme in her work.
